I keep these too. They came as Hemigrammus sp. "Tetra Orange".
They seem to have scales on the base of the caudal fin, which correspond well with being an Hemigrammus, and they show an adipose fin, so they are not a Hasemania nana, Silvertip Tetra.
I think they look amazing:
They do for...
This is one of the males I have had from Vichada.
It doesn't show any pattern in the caudal fin like your fish does. And I don't recall seeing any A. hongsloi with a pattern like rows of colored rectangles in the caudal fin.
According to the description (Kullander 1979) there is no pattern in...
Branchial calcium (Ca2+) uptake in fish gills is a vital process for maintaining calcium homeostasis, involving both active and passive transport mechanisms. It primarily occurs in specialized cells called "chloride cells" (also known as mitochondria-rich cells or ionocytes) located in the gill...
pH between 4 and 5, EC around 70 µS/cm.
Funny observation:
In a batch of around 80 fry from this female
there were 3 different "forms" of fry (for several months). I had not seen this earlier.
However, they all grew up to be "normal" looking D51s.
And in this species, males are...
When I was first contacted by Daniel (biologist, from Bogota), more than a decade ago, he had several unidentified Apistogramma which he had found, to show me. To keep track of them, and to honor the collector, I gave them a "D" (Daniel) number. When we then started traveling and exploring...
Don't be surprised to see different color forms of A. elizabethae: In the Rio Uaupés drainage there has been found a (senescent?) form which is almost completely white, except for two black lateral spots and a black suborbital (cheek) stripe. (Photos in page 385 & 387 in Cichlid Atlas 1, English...
My picture shows one of our most recent Apistogramma cf. personata discoveries, from a location we call Q4 in Colombia. (There are many other locations where similar forms could be found, here are some of them: (LINK))
The reason I asked is that when we collected the Morse Code Tetra in the Rio Putumayo drainage (LINK), which is far away from the Rio Nanay, the fisherman guiding us told us that this species could only be found there, and in a location much further east.
When I saw your statement that the...
The "...confirmed wild caught with a location of Tahuayo River" makes me wonder...-
Beyond that, I have no indication for either one or the other, so I refrain from speculation.
I don't remember having seen an A. nijsseni exactly like your new male....
I collected in the Rio Tahuayo in 2011 (LINK).
Didn't find any A. nijsseni there, and I have never heard of any A. nijsseni been found in the Rio Tahuayo by local fishermen.
However: There are small streams very close...
We collected A. viejita at the type locality, in January 2017:
Before that time it was very difficult to collect them, as the area was controlled by the FARC guerrillas.
It is easy to get to this area, but of course you'll have to know where to go, invest time and money to get there, and...
One of my females A sp. "D10":
No pattern in the posterior part of the dorsal fin, no pattern in the caudal fin.
Sorry, but as Frank told you: you have only showed us photos of males.
In one of my expeditions in 2011, we visited the Río Itaya drainage (again):
From the road Iquitos-Nauta we had a looong and hot walk
It was extremely hot, and the vultures were watching us, hoping for a meal:
We tried our nets here:
pH: 6.02 . Conductivity: 29 µS/cm ...
I don't have any. But in the dry season most of the streams look like this;
and I don't think you'll need underwater photos to see what it looks like beneath the surface.
I keep Nannostomus in most of my tanks. I have 11 different locations of N. marginatus, never any problems. I also keep...
We collected many Apistogramma within the A. macmasteri-complex in the Rio Meta drainage of the llanos in Colombia.
One species was found almost everywhere; Copella eigenmanni ( = Copella metae):
In small shallow streams:
In the restwater inside "palm oases":
and in the small lakes /...
I would just put all in the 29... I import all my fishes directly from South America, and of course I will have more than one pair of each species, just in case. So I always throw all the fishes of the same species and location in the same tank, when I receive the shipment.
In my most recent...
