Fish are:
14 Nannostomus eques
1 Copella arnoldi (male, will probably be moved to my other tank so I can put him in a group or just get him some females)
4 Apistogramma allpahuayo (unfortunately 2 males and 2 females, I'm trying to find a new home for the smaller male)
1 Hypancistrus sp. L201

Plants:
Vallisneria spiralis, Sagittaria subulata, Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Hygroryza aristota (will probably be replaced with Salvinia natans or Phyllanthus fluitans).

Hi all,
Lovely tank, and the fish look great (the male good colour, with really nice fin extension).

Seeing your Ramshorn snails and plant list
Vallisneria spiralis, Sagittaria subulata, Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Hygroryza aristota
made me wonder do you know how hard the water is?
I've failed to grow both Vallisneria and Hygroryza, which I put down to the water being too soft, and if I add Ramshorn snails they show pretty rapid shell attrition and bleaching.

cheers Darrel

Thanks all ;)

Unfortunately, I don't know how hard the water is. Adding blackboard chalk near the plant's roots might help. I never really paid attention if it actually worked though...
The Hygroryza wouldn't grow in this tank too, so I removed it. Quite a hard plant to grow in my experience.

I always have trouble with Vallisneria bought from the store, so I just get them from other people. That's the only way they'll grow...

Funny thing is, my water changes in this tank are only once every 2 months, while in my other tank I change water (30 - 40%) every 2 weeks. The shells of my Ramshorn snails in that tank look worse than in this one. Which seems strange, because our tap water is quite hard.

that's a gorgeous tank ... I'm extremely jealous. The driftwood layout is fantastic. I wanted to use Vallisneria in my tank for the beautiful flowing effect but I also read in many places that they do not do well in soft water.

Lovely tank :) and the tetras definitely add life.
Petitella georgiae are my favourite shoalers.

The female defending something. I can't find any fry but she actively protects this area:

Her pattern differs between bright yellow with just a single dot, a clear line (first and second picture) and a not so clear line, with a single dot in the center of it (last picture).

Nope, there aren't really any other benefits. Although my Apisto females seem to prefer laying their eggs near the roots, than elsewhere. It would also be a great hiding place for young fish I guess ;)

You just pick them up fresh, let em dry and wash before puting into the tank?

They should at least contribute it's part creating blackwater since they must have tamins...

Cheers
