As above,

Looking to breed my wild macmasteri (sold as viejita), but concerned my green neons (Paracheirodon simulans) will eat the fry... Has anyone had any success/experience with green neons and breeding apisto's together?

Thanks

I don't have direct experience with these two species together but I usually assume fry are too tempting of a treat for most any fish to pass up

If your goal is to bred them and raise fry then keep the Apistos by themselves. I'm had splash tetras work out in breeding tanks and occasionally pencil fish but that's about it. If I really want fry from a dwarf cichlid then they go in a tank by themselves.

Hi all,
Then what would you suggest using for dither fish
You just need a surface orientated soft-water fish that doesn't eat the fry. As well as Marbled Hatchets (Carnegiella strigata) or Hockey Stick Pencils (Nannostomus eques) etc., if you don't mind which continent they came from you can use Rocket Killi (Pseudepiplatys annulatus) or Threadfin Rainbow (Iriatherina werneri).

I've used both of these and they are fine.

Have those pencils. They are just as skiddish as the cacatuoides I have em in with! Thanks for the suggestions tho may have to try something else with em.

I have coral red pencils, and since adding them my f1 apistos are always out and about.

Maybe you could use a few more hiding places and general structure in the tank? Pencils can be reactive but I've seldom found them to be skittish if they are in a group of at least 6 and have some plants or wood/branches reaching near the top of the tank. Is the tank they are in in a place (hallway, entry/exit to a livingroom, etc.) were people walk by randomly that might be spooking them?
