I bred them a few years back, they get pretty aggressive but form a stable pair. I had to keep them in a 120cm tank because they were quite hard on other fish when spawning! They are not too fussy about water chemistry as long as it clean and well oxygenated and close to pH 7.
Yeah, I agree, they are aggressive and can be very territorial. But don't worry you can combine them with other fishes just make your tank spacious and put some hiding places. Good tankmates are Alestiid tetras, Chaetostoma sp., some of the larger characins and barbs and rheophilic Synodontis species such as S. brichardi.
