Looks very female to me, and ready to spawn. The amount of black on ventral fins, yellow colouration, and shape of first dorsal rays say female. Mine at that size show dorsal ray extensions usually if male, some significantly although......

Apistos continue to amaze me when sexing! I have what was a definate female who's been enjoying retirement in one of my Discus tanks. This fish, probably over 3 years old now, gave me many spawns and fry, and was around 1.5 inches in size at around 2 years old. After over a year in the Discus tank and being the only apisto in there, the fish has changed beyond recognition! Dorsal and cordial fins have reddened significantly with pronounced extensions. The fish has also changed shape with a hump back appearance though I think this may be age related, but it's coincided with at least an extra inch of growth from head to tail. I have video of this fish with fry just over a year back, I will try and get a good pic of it now and post comparison, I find it very fascinating, and then there's the old changing sex debate!!!

Hi all,
Female for me as well. You will probably find any offspring have checkered tail markings, as <"tail checkering is dominant"> to plain (like your orange flash male).

This is an old female cacatuoides of mine, again she was a documented female.

Thanks Darrel and Ade, this particular fish displays so many confusing traits, compared to my other females, while this fish is smaller, the ventral and anal fins are significantly longer as well as the spines on the dorsal fin being spiked instead of rounded, on top of that, this fish has had the yellow coloration since it was around 3 months old and hasn’t changed since then, none the less I’m leaning towards female by looking at interaction with other females.

I'm pretty sure she is a female, as @Ade205 says I don't think that you get male cacatuoides with that degree of black marking on the leading edge of the ventral fins.
