Hello,

New to the forum but I've been reading older posts for several months now. Apistogrammas are hard to come by in the Middle East but I was lucky enough to import some Agassizii Tefe Red Backs and Agassizii Double Reds a couple of months ago all doing well in their quarantine thus far.

Wanted to share some photos of the "Agassizii Tefe's" and get your opinions on what species they are or possibly composed of. I notice that the two males have different caudal pattern/color.

Dominant male (6 cm):

Subdominant male (Over 5cm):

Female (3.5 cm):

These fish look more like A. cf. agassizii (Netz/Net) to me. This form shows a dark edge all around the scale on the flanks. A. sp. Tefé shows wavy bands with each scale only dark on the top and bottom, not the sides. I see the Netz form more often sold as Tefé lately.

Thanks for that, Mike!

Yes, I figured they were probably Netz variety because of the pineapple-like configuration of the flank scales you mentioned in some of your previous posts. I was wondering if they could be A. Agassizii "Tefe" however because I'm not sure how to differentiate between those and A. cf. Agassizii (Netz/Net).

The A. agassizii population found in the lower Rio Tefé is the holotype form which occurs from the lower Rio Negro and Madeira into tributaries of the Peruvian and Colombian Amazon. The Netz form occurs in northern tributaries of the lower Amazon below the Rio Negro.
