Sadly to say, but the fish didn't make it. The swelling declined a bit in one of the diseased fish but still not enough as it still blocked their oesphagus.

I think I started the treatment too late but I had been searching for the cause for a long time untill Darell came up with a possible solution.

Sorry to hear that. On a completely differet note, a recent publication has claimed this fish is now Copella nattereri.

Or possibly iodine deficiency was not really the cause of the swelling, even though the external symptoms looked similar to goiter. Hope you next batch does better!

I looked at the paper and indeed, C. callolepis is now described as the fish that we morphologically know as C. nattereri. And for C. nattereri it's the other way round.

You could be right but I wasn't home for two weeks and the fish died in the mean time. So I wasn't able to perform dissection in order to possibly elucidate the cause.

I don't have any Pencil fish etc. at present, but next time I keep them, I'm going to fed them a lot more vestigial winged Drosphila melanogaster, and keep a very close eye on their health.

cheers Darrel

Where would you say is the best place to get these Darrel, or is the answer going to be "from work"?

I kept a culture for about five years. although for a lot of that time I didn't actually have any fish that ate them. Eventually wild type Drosophila got in and they brought micro-worms with them (from the micro-worm culture, which they also got into) and they dwindled away.

You can buy them from <"Dart Frog places">. I used Weetabix and banana as the culture medium, with some wood wool added. It works fine, and so do Rolled Oats and orange juice.

cheers Darrel

Cheers. I'll have to look into that as I have Pyrrhulina cf. brevis, Copella compta, Copella arnoldi, Nannostomus marginatus, N. nitidus, N. beckfordi and N. eques, as well as plenty of other fish that may eat them. My angelfish used to love live locusts.
