A LFS told me that Super Red Hongsloi are actually a man made variant of Apisto. McMasteri that was developed in China

Both varieties are the product of selective breeding. The Super Red Hongsloi was developed by wild A. Hongsloi that were "redder" than the others that were caught in the wild. Via selective breeding of this "red wild fish", this commercial variation was created.
The Super Red Macmasteri/ Viejita Red II (falsely named viejita)/ Macmasteri red Mask , were all created by nicely colored, wild A. Macmasteri.

The 'Super Red Hongsloi' are domestic strains produced from A. hongsloi (Rotstrich) crossed with one or more of the A. cf. hongsloi forms from other parts of Colombia & Venezuela. The mixing of forms occurred over many years by many different breeders. There are several different strains of 'Super Red' sold commercially.
