    Are my tank mates compatible?

generally speaking cichlids kept in good condition will try to breed and this creates agression. often it is on the spouse but often towards tankmates. some people keep male only tanks to minimise agression, but i think 1 species of cichlid is enough for even larger tanks. there are lots of...

    Stocking for 127"x20"x18 tank

i've watched cories predate eggs often enough to know not to keep them with any type of dwarfs. maybe you don't need to actively breed your fish but watching the cories just run in and take the eggs or fry at will can't be fun can it? sounds like a nice tank, i'd like to see that. rick

    Apistos here I come!

    >>'Is RO necessary?' it depends on how hard and alkaline your water is, the species you're keeping and whether you want your fish to be able to breed successfully. my water is 160 ppm, ph 7.8, and i can get small to medium spawns grown out of a. cacatuoides and a. borellii among others, but...

    rising kh and ph

    >>'I've never paid alot of attention to the kh during the initial setup period as its never really fluctuated for me before. Is it somehow connected to the nitrogen cycle?' that would be an unqualified 'no' imo. >>'also I've always been under the impression that if you fully stock a tank...

    rising kh and ph

kh rises due to some substance being added to the water. there is either this case, or your tests are off. maybe check a little more carefully? i've not had a problem using ferts, there doesn't seem to be much in them which will affect kh. rick

    Treatment of new plants

i have treated with 1/20 household bleach to water and with 1/50 solutions, and i haven't had any problems with the 1/50 treatment. a 5 min 1/50 bleach dip will kill anything afaik. with delicate pants you are taking your own risks. i pour 3 buckets of water the same temp and use the 1st as...

Suggestions for Amazon River Specific Apistos & Rams????

your ruby rams will do fine in that water, but successful breeding may be hit and miss. you might get a few. but they should live in your water perfectly fine. getting 6 was a wise choice. they do better as a school till you get 2 paired off ime. but a 55 gal is plenty big enough. rick

    crenicichla regani

you keep those with guppies? boy they sure aren't anything like compressiceps in temperment. you should see what a compressiceps can do to a guppy. they are on my list too. rick

    insect nymphs in my filter?

almost anything can come into your tank in egg or larva form when bringing in new plants. some of these things can colonise your gravel, filter or just about anywhere. i would think that just about anything that will live in your tanks will find enough to eat from food, feces, plants or even fry...

    Tubercules in Czech Fishes

i think tuberculosis is a very important thing to keep in mind no matter where you get the fish from. also remember this disease can be transmitted to humans. i think anyone who keeps fish should do a google search for fish tuberculosis and read the many articles on this subject. you should...

Can you teach an apisto to eat snails?

aah-hem. snails don't ever seem to get used to bleach.

    clay pots

ime, it greatly depends on how much pressure there is in the tank from other fish, what type of spawning substrate they will use. i have a 90 gal tank with only 1 male and 2 female cacs. one female laid in a deep crevice in a piece of driftwood, even though there was a clay pot for her. in tanks...

Seachem Flourite Cloudiness bad for fish?

    >>' There are two avenues you can go down.' if there were only 2 roads, it would make planted tanks very easy. there are as many roads as you can find info on, or think up yourself! new products and methods seem to be arriving daily. diy projects abound, many of these are refined and put on the...
