Thank you all for this information/discussion. Again, not sure if it'll really make that large a difference, but worth a try. I feel that as long as I get a general "preferable" or "natural" range for each species that I'm keeping, I should do okay. I've had the three species I keep currently...
Badass!!! Thanks! This is helpful! I was able to find some averages of temps for some of the larger rivers online in real-time, some of which seem to contradict this a bit…but this link is extremely helpful!
Thanks again!
Interesting...I haven't read this yet, but based on this statement, it does seem that maybe I should try and better match the temperatures from which particular species come!
Thank you for replying!
So, this is a very broad question and one that I'm sure someone will give me grief for even asking...but...
I ran across the map for type localities of various Apistogramma species (I think someone in here steered me toward it a while back, but can't be sure). Anyway, I recently ran across a...
I’m not sure, either. Happens with one or two of those that reply. Doesn’t matter to me. I tend to keep it pretty light on my end.
Thanks for the reply, though! There are a couple here that I value the opinions of, though they’re usually not dicks…haha (oh, don’t get caught laughing here...
I’m glad that you reiterate that a display tank isn’t a breeding tank. Not sure why you reiterate it…I said nothing about a display tank…???
“Blackwater inspired” and “Blackwater” are two different things. Happy it screams other genera to you, though. Again…???
Sorry you think the domestic...
Hey, everyone.
Been a minute since I've posted, but that wasn't intentional. I'll start by saying thank you to everyone who commented on my previous threads (honest replies or smart ass ones, all are appreciated...HA!). I've been very successful at spawning and raising A. borellii, A...
Yeah, I’m aware that each fish can be different, but the only Apistogramma I have any experience with at all is cacatuoides (and very minimal with agassizii), so wasn’t sure about panduro.
Thanks for the reply/info/observations!
New pair of A. panduro, and they just spawned about a week after introducing to tank. They are a known pair from before, and I’ve read that they typically form a true (as close to as is considered in nature, anyway) monogamous pair, but I was curious if this was one of the species I’ve heard...
Thanks for the reply!
I feel like the tetras helped them spawn. They’d been in a tank together for months and had only spawned one time, but ate eggs (my fault, 100%). Someone suggested I move them and put some other fish with them, I did, and then bam! The tetras never came close in all the...
So my A. cacatuoides finally produced fry, as indicated in a previous post. I had the pair, all fry (15-20?), and 9 black neon tetras in a 40 breeder, heavily planted (trust me, it’s HEAVILY planted) tank. All was fine. Female was doing a GREAT job at raising fry, everyone left them alone (the...
I know most here probably won’t think anything of this, but my A. cacatuoides pair FINALLY bred! Here are a couple pics of the female with fry.
Now, as with most things, opinions seem to be split, with some removing fry, some removing male only, and some leaving them all together. I KNOW every...
ALSO, I’d love to add that I sincerely appreciate the genuine responses and engaging conversations that have been added to my questions here. It has been my experience that a LOT of forums online are riddled with smartass trolls who just like to start fights and “pick on the new kid”, so to...
It totally depends on the species. The biological species concept says that if two can crossbreed and produce viable offspring, then they are the same species. The key is viable. This also depends largely on what taxonomic group you’re looking at, as certain species concepts are favored over...
